The Watercolour Atelier
REGISTRATION OPEN NOW
Six weeks. Small group. A real foundation.
This is a course for people who want to learn sound watercolour foundation. On this course, I teach painting in this specific medium from fine art perspective and I make sure it is suitable for complete beginners.
The course takes place in my home studio in Moabit, in a group of no more than six. That intimacy is deliberate. It means I can watch how you work, understand what you need, and teach you rather than the room.
What We Do
Over six sessions we build the essential language of watercolour from the ground up — how washes behave, how colour relationships work, how light and form emerge through transparent layers. We move through landscape, still life observational study and detailed eye painting to a final piece that consolidates knowledge.
The sessions are carefully planned to balance substantial new knowledge with enough time to practice. The progress is cumulative - each session builds on the previous one.
What Will You Will Explore
Materials and nature of washes
Colour mixing and harmony
Light, form and atmosphere
Composition and visual storytelling
Landscape, still life and portrait - the eye
Who This Course Is For
Beginners and early-stage painters who want to establish a solid foundation in watercolour within an intimate, attentive studio setting. You don’t need experience. If you've tried watercolour before and found it frustrating, this course is especially for you.
Who This Course Is Not For
Those seeking a fast-paced “paint-along” or decorative workshop. Students should be prepared to work patiently, step by step, and embrace gradual skill development.
"Sylvia is an amazing teacher. I loved the way she explained and demonstrated a wide range of techniques — lifting, blooms, glazing, washes — and then gave us the opportunity to practise them over several weeks. I learned so much in such a short time. Her classes were inspiring, enjoyable, and incredibly rewarding." (Susan, Berlin)

About the instructor
I am a practising artist with an established painting practice focused on female narratives and the aesthetics of absence (MFA University of the Arts London). I have been teaching studio art since 2017 — at Oxbridge Academic Programs in Cambridge, and in small-group settings of my own design.
The Watercolour Atelier Berlin Edition is now in its second cohort, refined from the first. It reflects how I believe this medium should be taught - in an unhurried attentive way.
Places are limited to six per group. If you are considering it, I'd encourage you not to wait.
